Home Safety
Home Safety Tips General Principles: 1. Remove all throw rugs in the home. 2. Light switches should be within easy reach. Consider automatic timers, touch on/off lights or clap lights. 3. Be sure no electrical cords are lying where they might be tripped over. 4. Remove frayed carpeting and be sure stair carpeting is firmly affixed. 5. Be sure there is an operational smoke detector in the home. 6. Sliding glass doors should be marked clearly. 7. Consider reorganization of furniture for ease of mobility and safety. 8. If you live alone, arrange for someone to come by or phone once daily. 9. Have operational cell phone or telephone extensions in as many rooms as possible and keep emergency phone numbers and candles/lighter by each phone. 10. Consider purchasing a “life line” emergency notification system. Bathroom: 1. Install grab bars in shower/bathing or toileting areas as recommended. 2. Consider use of bath or shower seat as appropriate. 3. Use non-slip bathmats and/or strips in front of and in bath or shower. 4. The temperature of the water should be thermostatically controlled (140 degrees F) 5. Install the kind of lock of the door that can be opened from the outside. 6. Use long handled brush or sponge for lower extremities/back to improve safety. 7. Install a hand held shower hose that allows easy control of water flow. 8. Place all soaps, shampoos within easy reach. Consider wall caddy, soap on a rope or soap placed into a nylon stocking tied in accessible location. Bedroom: 1. Have nightstand with phone and light within easy reach. 2. Place sturdy armchair in room for dressing. 3. Reorganize clothing in closets and drawers for ease and accessibility. 4. Do not smoke or eat in bed. Kitchen: 1. Always have non-flammable potholders near stove and oven. 2. Don’t wear long sleeves, scarves or flammable apron when cooking. 3. Turn pot handles so that they don’t project over edges of stove. 4. Cover frying pans with mesh guards of lids to prevent spattering. 5. Have a fire extinguisher nearby and be aware of proper usage. Never pour water onto a grease fire...use salt or baking powder. If fire starts in oven, close the door and turn off heat to cut off oxygen. 6. Keep sharp utensils separate from other items and store in covered rack or on magnetized board. 7. Never use electric appliances near sink/water and be sure that cords are not frayed. 8. Transport hot dishes on lapboard or wheeled cart. 9. Wipe up all spills immediatley. Christina Williamson OTR
